Members of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Extended School Year Program enjoyed a visit from an ice cream truck on July 30. The students were treated to 12 varieties of ice cream flavors with all they toppings they desired.

“What makes the ice cream truck so special is that this truck is owned and operated by one of our ESY student’s family, Jake Mauro,” Executive Director for Alternative Education Eric Arlin said. “Jake is well on his way to becoming an excellent ice cream vendor, selling some of the most delicious ice cream we have ever tasted.”

The Extended School Year Program, which is fully in-person this year, is designed for students with special needs to continue to receive educational services over the summer, including academic work, vocational training and daily physical activities. The program also provides students with recreational activities and events to expand their social experiences. In addition to the ice cream treat, they have enjoyed going to the movies and bowling, taking Spanish lessons and being exposed to a Cuban experience, as well as creating films. Approximately 60 students are participating in the program this summer.
